Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, so-called “CLP”, defines new rules of Classification, Labelling and Packaging for chemicals (substances and mixtures). It implements in the EU the International Recommendations of the GHS (Globally Harmonised System).
It repeals EU Directives on Dangerous Substances (No 67/548/EEC) and Dangerous Mixtures (No 1999/45/EC).
The CLP Regulation aims at maintaining a high level of protection of human health and environment.
Operators, including flavouring manufacturers, have to:
- Identify hazard classes of substances and mixtures;
- Decide for their classification according to the rules set out in the CLP Regulation;
- Communicate on the identified hazards along the supply chain, through the labelling of products and by providing Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
Ultimately, those rules aim at alerting the workers and users of substances and mixtures to the presence of a hazard and the need to take specific precautions for their handling, in order to avoid exposures and the resulting risks.
